Easy DIY Granny Square Poncho

 

I saw this really cute granny square poncho on Pinterest and my sister and I decided to try to make one.  We bought the yarn and started making our granny squares.  She had not crocheted in over 30 years, and still has a beautiful stitch.  To date, however, my sister is not finished with her poncho, although she has made two beanies.  If she ever finishes her poncho, maybe she will let me post it.  Her colors were purple, black and white. The poncho from Pinterest appears to have 16 squares.  But when I made the 16 squares and arranged  them on the floor, it did not appear to be big enough for me, so I decided to make more squares.  I ended up making 30 squares instead of 16 and that gave me more length in the arms and the overall size of the poncho.  I hated making the additional 14 squares, but it made the poncho more roomy and better.

I bought the yarn from Hobby Lobby, during a 30% off yarn situation, which they seem to have quite often, which makes me very happy.  I chose a mustard, cream white and gray, because I thought those color combinations would go very well together.  And they did!  It took a long time to make up all of the 30 squares, but once I got all of them together, I had to weave in all of those dadblasted threads, which I totally despise.  I have seen ways to avoid this from other crafters and may venture in perfecting one of those methods.  I absolutely dread that part of the process. The yarn was “Yarn Bee” in Mustard, Linen and Dark Gray.  I don’t remember how many skeins I used for the poncho.

Even thought this is not a tutorial, I want to share a few tips on how easy it was to make.  Basically, if you know how to make a granny square, making this poncho will be pretty simple.  Just make 30 granny squares, using as many colors as you like. I chose three, because I did not want the thread weaving situation to be any worse than it was already going to be.  Then you simply connect the squares, making a front piece and a back piece.  Connect 4 squares together, then connect another 4 squares to that, and then another 4 squares to those 8, and then another 3 squares.  This will create one side. Do the same thing for the back.  Once you do this, choose whatever trim color you want, I chose mustard, and then double crochet around the entire front piece and the entire back piece, creating a border.  See the pictures below. I laid my squares on the floor to help me see how to put them together.  After you create the front and back, you just lay them together, right sides facing each other, and then crochet them together on the sides using a slip stitch or a single crochet stitch.  I also added a tie for the front which is just a chain and a row of single crochets.  I also added some ties to the side, which I believe is a special touch.

Finally, let me say what a cutie pie this poncho is after after all of the work.  It was not the longest crochet project I have done thus far, but it did take a minute to put it together.  I am currently working on a crochet blanket which I hope to finish in a few months and a crochet coat which I have been ignoring for a year.  I started it in July 2019 on the coat and I am still not done with it.  I am taking it a little at a time on both, but plan to finish both this year.  Both of these were on my goals for 2020 but I did not finish either one.  I have added them to my 2021 goal list.  I mention them in my New Year’s Post.  In case you missed that post, here it is.  https://sewzaizay.com/new-years-resolutions-why-not/
