Simplicity 9104, Jersey Knit asymetric maxi dress. www.sewzaizay

Hello Everyone. This is Simplicity S9140, a relaxed knit dress with sleeve and length variations. I made View B, a size Large. The pattern has 8 pieces and I cut all 8 pieces to make this dress. Here is the pattern. Simplicity S9140

The Pattern

This is a good pattern for beginners and is part of Simplicity’s EASY TO SEW line. What a beginner would learn by making this dress is how to properly apply interfacing and facing to a collar, add pockets gathering, and how to make a small sash. You end up with a beautiful dress that can easily be modified and repeated. I thought the pattern was easy. At first, when I chose this pattern, I was reluctant because I thought it was kind of plain. However, depending on the fabric, you could easily jazz it up by choosing a fun print or textured fabric. I was going to a hat tea with a friend and wanted to make something to wear. So I was choosing between this dress and two others.

The  Fabric

I purchased this fabric from FabricMart.com (https://www.fabricmartfabrics.com/). I buy a lot of my fabric from this company and they always have a sale. I love the weight of this knit fabric. Not too thin like some of the jersey knit fabrics can be. I purchased about 4 yards of it and there was plenty to make this dress. The pattern required 3.75 for my view and size. I was reluctant to use this brown fabric for the dress because I was afraid it would wash me out. Luckily, that was not the case, and the color was, in my opinion, magnificent. I am very happy with it

Modifications and Style Options

I made a few modifications. I wanted a wider belt, because when I finished my dress it was rather large. So, I made a wide belt to wrap around the waist and it worked out beautifully. I also wore it tied to the side when I actually attended the hat tea. Either way worked out great. I also made modifications to the skirt. I added about 3 inches to the sides where the skirt angles because I wanted it to be fuller there. When I make this dress again, however, I will definitely cut a smaller size and create a more fitted waist than the dress I made this time. This dress could also be used for just the skirt by adding an elastic waistband and/or even making it a longer maxi. Adding elastic to the waistband is also an option that would have eliminated the need for a wider belt for me. You could add longer sleeves or even a gathered sleeve to give it more of a boho look. And, of course, you could make it shorter. This dress is perfect. I wore it with a tan hat and gold jewelry and there are too many options to style it up. It would look great with boots and even a duster, [I wore a denim duster] as well as a short jacket and sandals, low or high. Too many options. I plan to make it again as soon as possible, but a smaller size.

My Final Thoughts

I wore this dress to the hat tea and absolutely love it. I love the length and the flow and the fabric. It is a perfect dress and the pattern is great as well. It is a pattern that you can really get creative with, by changing the fabric to a funkier print, or keeping it simple and classic with a basic black jersey knit and going nuts with accessories. What I liked best about the pattern is my modification on the belt. I love the wide belt, which can be tucked, or if you are adventurous, sewn onto the dress. I also like the angles on the sides of the skirt. It reminds me of these Simplicity makes I posted on my blog a few years ago. They are very similar.
